The lighthouse was built in 1849 on the southwestern cape of the island of
Dugi otok, 35 km west of the city of Zadar. The villages of Veli Rat, Verunic
and Polje are 3 km away, while the ferry port in Bribinj is 20 km away.
About the accommodation unit
The lighthouse, surrounded by pine trees, beautiful bays and pebble beaches,
is considered one of the most beautiful on the Adriatic. Veli Rat offers an
unforgettable experience - splendid views from the 40 m high lighthouse tower.
The lighthouse has one four-bed and one three-bed apartment. The lighthouse
can be reached by car. Due to roads leading to neighboring places, a regular
supply of provisions is not a problem. Dense pine woods surrounding the
lighthouse offer a wide range of activities for active holiday lovers who are
not primarily interested in suntanning and swimming. The surrounding waters
are rich in various types of fish.
During your stay in Veli Rat, you can visit Kornati National Park and
Telascica Nature Park nearby. The starting point for trips to Kornati is the
place of Sali on the other side of Dugi otok. The lighthouse has always had a
lighthouse keeper and there has always been a waiting list, since many
lighthouse keepers have been dreaming of spending at least some time in this
unique lighthouse. At the moment, the lighthouse keeper Zvone, his wife and
daughter Ivana live in the lighthouse. If you decide to spend your holiday in
Veli Rat, their hospitality awaits you.
Beaches
There are two wonderful pebble beaches suitable for small children in the
vicinity of the lighthouse. If you go for a walk, you will pass by several
charming bays.
Underwaters
Waters surrounding the lighthouse are relatively shallow and great for
underwater fishing. The best underwater fishing area is about 2 miles east of
the lighthouse, where there are steep cliffs. The Lagnici cliffs surround the
shallow waters on the western side where you will find a shipwreck. East of
Veli Rat, the seabed is extremely deep, which is somewhat unusual for this
part of the island of Dugi otok. (this part can be left out) The islet of
Mezanj nearby is famous as a favorable fishing area.
Transfer
The island of Dugi otok is connected to the mainland by ferry line Zadar -

Provisions
There is an open market, as well as many grocery stores in the vicinity of the port of Zadar. Please keep in mind that prices on Dugi otok are much higher than in Zadar, while it might be difficult to purchase some provisions during high season, such as fresh meat. Fish can be bought from the lighthouse keeper if arranged in advance, while you can also arrange preparation of fish specialties with the lighthouse keeper and his wife.
Interesting to know
The thick lighthouse walls, that according to legend contain thousands of
egg-whites to make them more resistant to wind and sea, protect you from the
blazing sun in the summer months. There is an old church under a century-old
pine tree in the large paved yard.
