Island of Krk

The island of Krk is called "the golden island" because its sandy beaches, sunsets, wine, olive oil, and honey are all golden colored. This largest Adriatic island is connected to land by a bridge. Tourism on the island is focused on charming small towns of Krk, Omišalj, Malinska, Vrbnik or Baška. Visit any of these places on the island and take a walk through their narrow streets. Walking is not the only thing to do here, there is also diving, sailing, bicycling or surfing among others – your hosts will be there to assist you in your wishes. Vrbnička žlahtina is an excellent wine which goes well with traditional fishmeals, as well as shells spiced in fine olive oil.

Gastronomy

The island of Krk is called the Golden Island primarily due to the color of wine, honey and olive oil, which are all products of top quality. If you come to Krk, friendly hosts will welcome you with brandy that is served with dry figs. The island's cuisine is mostly based on fresh fish, scampi and other crabs as well as shells prepared with few spices and obligatory olive oil. There are also many types of homemade pasta (macaroni, gnocchi, "šurlice") served with sauces. All these delicious meals are recommended with golden colored Vrbnička žlahtina white wine made on the island.

Sport

Although it seems that time stood still on the island of Krk, it is not so. This can be best seen from the rich offer of sports and sport activities one can engage in during the stay on the island. Here, we would like to emphasize sailing and especially beautiful marina in the town of Punat. Lovers of sailing and underwater activities often visit the island of Krk and its archipelago. Almost every town on the island has a diving center where you can learn more about attractive diving locations. You can be active on land as well – you can drive a bicycle or try paragliding and see the natural beauties of the island from above.

Fun and night life

Those in search of dynamic nightlife will have a great time in Malinska since this is the center of nightlife on the island. The town of Krk is a good choice of all who search a more quiet, relaxed entertainment, or cultural manifestations that present folklore heritage. The island of Krk truly nourishes its tradition – we suggest visiting the town of Dobrinj which hosts many folklore manifestations and summer schools where you can learn how to play old instruments. Middle of August finds public festivity called Stomorina in the town of Omišalj. This is a festivity celebrating first fruits with dancing of young girls and boys in their traditional apparel.

Beaches

There are many types of beaches on the island of Krk, so you can choose one than suits you and your companions best. Those of you who prefer sand will probably visit beaches in towns of Malinska and Vrbnik, although these places have stone and pebbled beaches as well. Near village Šilo lies Šipanja bay with beautiful beaches as well. In the town of Omišalj you can find rocky and concrete beaches. The town of Baška is the most visited destination, mostly because of its 1800 meter long pebbled beach that forms a nice bay.

What to see?

Biserujka Cave

The Cave Biserujka is situated on the northern part of the island next to the village Rudine. This cave inspired many stories and legends among the local population. After it was illuminated, it is possible to take a tour through this natural gallery of ornaments formed by limestone and water through the ages. The cave is about one hundred meter deep and it sometimes hosts cultural manifestations such as classical music concerts.

The remains of Antique town of Fulfinum

The remains of the Antique town of Fulfinum are situated near Omišalj in Sepen bay. The town was built according to ancient urban plans for retired emperors. Although small in size, it had everything that an ancient urban town required. As the Antique civilization slowly faded, this town faded as well. Today, the remains of Fulfinum attract lovers of archeology and history, who can enjoy beautiful view of the sea from the top of the hill where the town once stood.

Vrbnik

Come to Vrbnik and try a glass of famous Vrbnička žlahtina wine, whose golden color and fine taste are memorable. Take with you the spirit of Vrbnik in a glass of žlahtina, indigenous souvenir from Vrbnik. The town is situated on the eastern part of the island of Krk, on a 78 meter high cliff. The remains of town include the town watch-tower and wall, Glagolithic printing shop, church of St. Antun Padovanski, or Klančić- the narrowest street in Vrbnik... choose what you want to see. Besides rich culture, Vrbnik also has beautiful stone and sandy beaches and several hunting areas near the town to offer as getaway from the busy everyday life.

The island of Košljun

This picturesque island is situated only 750 meter from the coast of the island of Krk, near the town of Punat. Košljun is a true cultural treasure. There is a Franciscan convent on the island with many valuable objects collected by the Franciscan monks and hidden from the passing of time. Items are many ranging from the collection of national apparel and objects from the nation's history to the rich collection of shells. There are also two other beautiful churches on the island. One is the church of Annunciation to St. Mary and the other is the church of St. Bernadine.

The islands of Rab, Lošinj and Cres

If you visit other islands of Kvarner bay – Rab, Cres and Lošinj, you will be able to see and experience their similarities and differences for yourself. You will be able choose your personal favorite among these islands. Each of them has its uniqueness but shares a common characteristic coastal charm that has been attracting visitors for many years. Rab is famous for its bell towers, Pag has two sides, one cold and stone, the other green and refreshing, Cres displays towns on high cliffs and is a home to griffon vultures, while Lošinj lures visitors with its lush greenery and beautiful beaches that can be enjoyed after a long bicycle drive.

Opatija riviera

Opatija riviera is 40 km long and rich in beautiful nature, parks, walking paths near the sea, old Austro-Hungarian villas and beaches.
In the 19th century in Opatija Austro-Hungarian noblemen built spacious villas and spent their winters due to very mild Mediterranean climate. Even today you can see the heritage of lifestyle of noblemen from Austro-Hungarian monarchy in the architectural stiles of villas. Now, these villas are turned into hotels. Most of them are situated next to a famous walking path «lungo mare» which is 12 km long and winds along the sea.
Be sure to visit nautical center Ičići, tourist destination Lovran, and Mošćenička Draga which will impress you with its 2 km long pebbled beach. Nature lovers can enjoy the peace and quiet of the nearby mountain Učka.
Parks with beautiful examples of indigenous plants, as well as exotic ones which arrived from Asia and Africa, cover much of the towns of Opatija riviera. Rijeka

Gorski kotar

Gorski kotar is a region in the mountainous part of Croatia situated between Kvarner bay and valley of river Kupa. It stretches to Velebit through the mountain of Velika Kapela. Both of these areas are very interesting despite carst vegetation since they offer numerous opportunities for hunting, mountaineering and other sports.
