EXPLORE ADRIATIC BEYOND THE BEACH
On our way to the medieval town of Ston we will make our first stop at
the village of Orašac and visit the Dubelj family house, where our host will
welcome us with a drink and show us their well preserved traditional mill. One
of our excursion highlights is Ston, with its 5.5 kilometres of stone walls,
the longest in Europe. The city was built in the 15th century according to a
plan with a rectangular scheme of streets and squares; the town's silent charm
is still ever present. We recommend you try the oysters and mussels from Ston
which have made the region world famous. Savour these delicacies in one of the
local restaurants, making your visit an unforgettable experience. Another one
of Ston’s landmarks are its old salt ponds, the oldest active salt ponds in
the world. We continue to the Arboretum in Trsteno, the oldest Croatian
monument of garden architecture, with a 15th century summer residence of the
Dubrovnik patrician family Gucetić-Gozze. Enjoy a unique view from its
pavilion over the islands or take a walk to the baroque Neptune’s fountain.
Surrounded by a beautiful Renaissance garden, your senses will be awakened by
intense scents of the luxuriant subtropical vegetation of magnolia, black
bamboo, laurel, eucalyptus, palm and camphor trees. Trsteno is also famous for
its two gigantic 500-year old plane trees.
