The world famous Gasteinertal ski resort, excursion center and thermae, about 100 km south of Salzburg, is placed in a glacier valley that is bounded by peaks that are over 3000 meters. The hundred year old tourist tradition of this region, going back to a time when emperors ruled Austria, has not only left its mark on the look of houses and hotels, but on the tourist offer that is as extensive during winter as in summer as well.
The entire valley abounds in thermal springs that have a benificial effect on rheumatism, allergies and sporting injuries. Active holiday enthusiasts have numerous activities at their disposal, ranging from skiing, skating, sledding, snowboarding and carving in winter, to hiking, mountaineering, alpinism and swimming in summer. A unique combination of sports and health tourism is made evident by one of the slogans of the Gastein tourist board: "After the slopes into the thermal springs!"
